I've been paying attention to this map (updated in real time): reproductiverights.org/maps/abortion-laws-by-state/
It's...a tough map to look at. Too many states have "Illegal" and "hostile" status. But having safe "islands" scattered about the country that cut down on travel times for those seeking reproductive care in states where the rights have been stripped away (or significantly restricted) is good.
We just need the current administration to ensure people can safely travel from state to state without fear of repercussions.
Anyway, a shoutout and a thank you to the voters in Kansas. You made the right choice.
Also, I want to clarify a statement I made in my "Alot going on in the world" post below.
I said something to the effect of "maybe we need to accept that some states won't allow abortions". If you can't tell from this post, and others, I'm a firm believer in the right to access to abortion for any people who can get pregnant. I don't like that Roe V Wade was over-turned.
But RvW WAS over-turned, and that's our current reality. So I accept what the current reality is. My hope is that either A) people in the "Hostile/Illegal" states show they won't tolerate a return to a pre-RvW world, or B) we can come to some good compromise where people who need an abortion aren't penalized for getting the care they need.
In the meantime, all we can do is the best we can do. Vote pro-choice when and where you can, help people who need to travel for care (ps- I have an air-mattress if anyone needs to travel to Oregon for reproductive care and can't afford a hotel/airbnb/whatever), and.....let's just do the best we can.
